In the past humans made it to Neptune, but quickly discovered the planet was inhabited with a species of mermaids. The humans waged war with the creatures and left the planet and species half dead. Fuelled with vengeance the mermaids rebuilt themselves over years of evolution and fusing with remnants of space ships, suits, and junk. They now swim the galaxy hunting the humans who mistreated them by puncturing their suits and suffocating any astronauts they may find.
